Thank you for your response.

I know a number of wonderful people who are trans, who would not be alive today had they not transitioned. These people have been attacked as victims of hate crimes. If everyone continues to think the same as we did about gender, these people would not be alive today. In the end, that's what it comes down to for me. People that I love and care about being able to safely live in the world. That requires me to accept them and their identities. If changing a definition means that fewer children die, then to me it is worth it. Gender is a social construct, sex is a biological one. Both exist in the world. Understanding this thinking saves lives. In the end if people are dying because others don't accept them, then it's worth it to rethink a definition. Just because we've always believed something is some way, is not enough evidence to keep up with. If people are dying from a belief, it's worth changing.

Gender is a social construct, sex is biological. They are a different thing. Social constructs exist, and they are important. The stock market is entirely a social construct. Countries, the concept of a country is a social construct. Culture is a huge social construct that is influenced by geography and other scientific things. But it's still a social construct, not a biological one. Social constructs are real and important. Sex is biological, Gender is social.

In the end, accepting this thinking saves lives, including the lives of children, and for me that's fine. If people, including children are dying, and we can change that by changing our thinking as a society, it's worth it. Otherwise we have Shirtly Jackson's lottery story happening.
