Such a great article. I can relate, I’ve been shamed so many times for having breasts, and the way we think about them as a society is wrong.
I’ll never forget the time my mom, unsolicited, sent me some bras she thought would look good on me. I tried them on, under my clothes, and my husband had this to say.
Him “those look good! You should wear one to work, they’re very professional!”
Me “why? What makes a bra professional?”
Him “your breasts look 2 sizes smaller, like you’re a B cup (I’m a D). That makes them professional.”
Me “why does shrinking my boobs appear more professional?”
Him “like you’re not trying to get so much attention. Duh.”
I was wearing the same work clothes I usually wear, nothing revealing, but just making my breasts looks smaller somehow makes me better at my job?
So my body, is apparently unprofessional and I must essentially lie about it to be taken seriously as an employee? Otherwise the way I am in my natural state is somehow an immature attention grab and thus less of an employee? WTF?
I gave those bras away that day. My body has nothing to do with others, or me being professional, or wanting attention, it just is what it is.
