She probably just wants to be taken seriously. This bathroom drama is them literally pointing yelling “look! Trans woman! Trans woman! It’s a trans woman in congress!” And the poor woman just wants to get back to her job.
Is the bathroom issue with trans people important? Yes, it for sure is. But everyone expecting her to jump in her is making her entire identity a two dimensional thing.
It reminds when when I had job once where I was the only woman in a male dominated field, everyone kept expecting me to be “the woman” for any and all the issues.
Reminds me of when there’s one black person at the office they are seen as a token not as any other worker. Then they’re somehow expected to be the expert on minorities.
Reminds me of how when a colleague learned I was queer, expected me to lead up our companies DEI program, even though this not part of my role and I was already swamped at work. It’s not my area of expertise and isn’t what I was hired for.
It’s an important issue, but she probably wants to get back to making laws, if she took the bait she would be continued to be labeled the trans congressperson more than as herself.
Just because someone is a minority, doesn’t sign them up for additional duties outside their job description.
Still though, I like to think she’ll address the issue in her own time when she’s ready. Or maybe she’s just going to embarrass countless male senators by making awkward conversation with them in the bathroom until they all realize this whole thing is stupid to expect her to use the men’s room. But either way, I don’t think this should be her job just because she’s trans.
