One reason these fundamentalist groups exist and are so controlling, is about power. Often these religious organizations have so much power of the people involved, what they wear, eat, who they can speak to, when they speak, what they can think, etc. That’s not to say many followers aren’t happy, many are, but their lives are controlled by others.

Women, posses a strong power that terrifies many men, more specifically men who feel the need to control other (not all men). Women can chose whose babies they carry and give birth to. For many people(especially narcissistically), this is a form of immortality. Men can’t have children without us, and feel it’s their right to do so. While we women, can simply pop over to a specific bank or find someone willing to screw us, and make babies. Or we can chose to not have babies of our own. This scares a lot of men, so slowly, this controlling behavior of women starts to seep into organized religion. If men can co trim women, they can control having off spring, and take that power away from them. This reduces women from being actual people, and existing for sexual/reproductive purposes. I’ve met so many men, who are literally pissed at women because they can’t control them, and think their entitled to their bodies, become violent at the very though of women having rights as people.
So then you get these rules, of how we must dress, that we have to answer to men above us, that we must give up our power, a policing of our bodies and denied access to birth control (that’s for the man to decide), an infantising of us as stupid, so that men should be controlling us, etc. It shows up in lots of religions, even ones founded on unrelated beliefs because religion (among other things) is a great mind control device.
