Interesting read. I recently read something else that said perhaps we should stop asking why some people are trans and searching for a medical reason and just accept that some people are trans and worthy of support.
However, for the millions of trans phobes, these scientific studies show that being trans is an actual thing, it has a concrete scientific explanation, but will that ever be enough for them?
Personally, and this may not be accepted, I’ve come to a more spiritual reasoning. I think God, or the universe, or nature or what have you created trans people on purpose and their existence is important. Trans people are a natural variation that happens in human life. Much like albinism, red hair, tetrachromatics, genius, dwarfism, perfect pitch, etc. these things just happen, people are diverse.
Trans people are important in a society and should be heard, because they can offer greater insight into gender and gender roles than others have and we need that.
A friend of mine (ftm) explained once he got more respect in society as a gay man than he did when he presented as a straight woman. He actually has the experiences of both and thus understood more. If American society has listened to trans people, and understood gender is often an innate thing not necessarily changeable by family/societal pressure, then the tragedy of David Reimer may have been prevented.
Trans people exist and they happen as a natural variance of human life. I think accepting them as valid and listening to them is important as their gender experiences provide unique insights into gender, and that can help us understand and build healthier societies. In short, we need trans people, it may be rarer than being cis, but their existence is not “a mistake” but a valuable part of world and society.
