Interesting article.
I imagine while racism is racism, the way it appears in different cultures and places may be different.
Racism in a California book store may look different than racism in an east coast board school. Both are racism, but the means in how they are carried out are different.
I imagine racism in Hollywood appears way different than racism in the British aristocracy.
As a white woman, I have often seen a racist sort of 'group denial' happening within us, that I wonder if Megan was indoctrinated into.
If we pretend the discrimination isn't there, maybe we overcome it, is the mentality. The language is "Let's not let a thing like racism or sexism set is back, no excuses."
Sort of if we pretend it isn't a sexists, racist world, and just work harder, maybe it won't affect us.
such a mentality is very gaslighting of the experiences of the oppressed, but it allows us to be in denial while trying to build ourselves up in society. I saw and heard this attitude all the time growing up as a white woman, and it's racist mentality was pushed on me.
I wonder if Megan was exposed to this mentality, and while she did experience racism in her California upbringing, it was expressed very differently and less blatant than that racism she experienced in the British royal family and tabloids.
Perhaps she was able to keep her head in the sand a little more in Hollywood due to her fair skin. However, that won't stand in the royal family, and institution so closed off and exclusive, they literally have inbred for hundreds of years. To such a society, a drop of black may make you a hudge black sheep, while in Hollywood, she can pass as white enough at times.
Racism is Racism. But Racism may look different in different places, cultures, and institutions. It may have different modes of expression, based on culture, places, and people. The Royal family is a very different institution than we are used to seeing, and studying how racism appears and manifests there is relevant and different than how it appears in other places.
