I'm glad to hear your opinion on this piece.
I think the movie, and various characters are really about the (often dysfunctional) dynamics of families. These "powers" and Maribel's lack of powers, are metaphors for identities in families and how how they effect family dynamics. Yes, a lot of things seem messed up, but that's because families are messed up. Yes, it's a magical, often illogical film , like Luisa carrying donkeys (why? no logical reason there, yes). Such details of what the people do with their gifts isn't so important as the burden/privledge their gifts carry onto their lives.
Often in families, people find themselves taking on roles, and these can be burdens for people.
Often there's a family member who feels they have to be strong for the family, take on all the burdens, and never show weakness (Luisa), her strength is a metaphor for this familial archetype
Often in families there's someone that thinks if they just do everything right, everything will be okay. They lose themselves and their actual identity in pleasing others, to the point where they don't know who they are (Isabella).
Often there's a person who feels their family doesn't feel safe or appreciate who they are, and they have to hide themselves away. I can relate to this character trait (Bruno). That person may still love and care for their family, but they have to hide themselves.
Pepa is a metaphor for people feeling haunted by their emotions. If she gets upset or angry, everyone knows and it upsets everyone. Often in families people feel like they aren't allowed their real emotions, or them having emotions at all is a burden for those around them.
And then there's the family member who feels less than others, excluded, incapable of perfection of uniqueness. A person who struggles with feeling like they belong (Maribel).
It's an allegory, so it's not meant to make much literal sense. It's about how people behave in family situations and intergenerational trauma. It's fun to watch the film and catch the details that elude to symbols and foreshadowing. In the art and spectacle there are tons of details that show what is happening,
True, it's think on plot, it's more drama about people and their lives, less actual stuff happens.
