I recently got into a fight with a woman who told me trans people dont have a right to exist. She told me I needed to be tolerant of her, as someone who believes trans people shouldn’t be allowed to live.
Like, wtf?
I’m not excluding her from the world or doing anything terrible to her, I’m just disagreeing. She called me a hypocrite for accepting trans people have a right to live, but not accepting not her as someone who doesn’t think they have a right to live. I agree, tolerance is about letting that person live their live. Calling them out on hate is not intolerant. Saying someone should not be allowed to live is intolerant. Saying “that’s a hateful thing to say” is disagreeing with someone, not being tolerant. When did being tolerent mean agreeing with someone and not calling them out when they do something hateful? People have a right to disagree, it shouldn’t be classified as intolerant.
