I love this article.

As a white bisexual woman, I never really knew of this perspective, so it was great to hear it. Now I’m going to think twice about what my subconscious says or my behavior around black androgynous individuals. Do I assume black women are stronger? What does black femininity look like? I know several black butch lesbians, but how many examples of black androgyny are there? And also how many non-binary black people do I know and how does their skin color effect my perception of them? Most of the non-binary people are white or Latino.

I can’t help but think of a few androgynous black men and women I’ve encountered, and think about how lovely they are, as I am sure you are too. But what racism am I being sold and am buying without my awareness and consent? And how does that interact with gender expression?

It’s sad our culture is so messed up. Gender is something I greatly enjoy in other people, but it should never be something someone has to prove or has been taken away from them. People should be allowed to express their gender and/or their androgyny however they will without having to explain or prove or claim it.
