I have to say, I think this advice was the right thing I needed to hear when I was younger and struggling to find the right job for me, that was also during the great recession and ere wasn’t much out there. Most of the jobs I had didn’t pay much and weren’t really carrier material. However I worked lots of them sometimes 3+ at a time, gaining a ton of skills that helped my career in the long term. One part time gig I had for 4 years, the reason, they kept teaching me new skills, and giving me a raise each time I mastered one. Most of the others were 2 years, when I found a better paying job with more future and growth available. Currently, I am at what I consider my dream job for 2 years now. I have a list of goals and skills I want to achieve at this particular place. I have only achieved half of them so far, and I don’t think this job will get boring for at least another 3 years. Last month I talked to my boss about all the things I want to start doing next year and she gave me her full support, and even shelled out some serious dough for me to take some classes on the side to help. I feel I’m not done growing at this job, and I want to bring my positive changed to the company. Yes, I know I could get a new manager any day and the whole climate could change. They key to me staying at a position is offering me more room to grow and improve the product, otherwise, I’ll find another job that does. I want to grow as an employee, and as long as you job supports that, I will stay.
