I am not sure what to think about this, but thank you for writing about it. Growing up, I always wanted a black barbie doll, or at least some barbies that were anything but white. All my barbie dolls were white and it felt weird. I had black friends and was around children of different colors, it seemed weird all my dolls were big blonde ladies. I remember wanting and asking for the black barbie dolls I saw at the store, but as a white child my parents just seemed to think they weren't for me. I think there was also concern over cultural appropriation perhaps? However I always wanted one. As an adult, I am so happy with the diversity that barbie has developed. I now have many diverse barbies, including a wheel chair barbie, vitiligo barbie, and barbies of different ethnic backgrounds.
As a white child, I wanted more diverse dolls to play with. It made sense to me. Are white girls allowed to now love dolls of other skin colors? Is this good or is it some form of appropriation? And if it is good, why aren't there any asian, black, latina or other types of girls playing with these dolls? I have no idea, I'm just glad I get to have my diverse barbies even though I am white. I hope there's nothing wrong with that.
