I always loved that movie. I literally knew people at that time who kept their homosexual relationships secret from their parents in different countries. I felt its this a story many can relate too:

Did you know that Village theater in Seattle and Everett Washington actually made a musical theater adaptation of the movie? I went and saw it performed on stage in the early aughts, complete with songs and dancing.

Also i want to point out (spoiler alert!) in addition to being a movie that examines queer American culture interecting with immigrant culture assimilation, which is very complex, I felt it was revolutionary in that there is what I would call an rape scene, where a gay man is essentially rape by a woman. I didn’t think of it as that at the time; but looking back that’s what it was. There have been many movies where women are rapped, but seldom do you see a man being raped, and by a woman. That’s a thing that happens, and I feel like it needs to be talked about more-instead of laughed away as a joke. I feel that having that represented is very powerful, albeit taboo.
