Hi there. I have a condition called lipedema. If you don’t what lipedema is, I suggest you read about it. It’s very common. 11% of cis women have it.
I exercise an average of 8 hours a week. I have consistently lived a low-carb life style for the last 5 years. I am in excellent shape. Due to my lipedema, I am fat, and although I live a very strict life style, most of the fat will not come off. Lipedema fat is resistant to diet and exercise. A woman with lipedema can literally starve to death and still have large, obese fat on her legs. Also, I have hypothyroidism, which further complicates losing weight. Hypothyroidism slows down my metabolism making weight loss even harder.
Lipedema, heavily impacts the but area, along with legs. Why should I have to pay double for an airline seat when I have a medical condition that I cannot control? I am doing everything in my power to keep my weight down, but yes, I have an obese but and now I have to pay more for an airline seat? Because I have a medical condition that I have no control over I have to pay more to fly? How is that not discrimination?
Many people have looked at me and judged my body for being this way.
As with many people with lipedema, I am not at risk for heart disease or diabetes because I am in great shape.
Lipedema is very common. More women have lipedema than are left handed, and yet we are constantly blamed, shamed, and forced to pay more for something that is not our fault.

I guarantee, I work harder than most people to keep my weight what it is which is probably at least 60 lbs heavier than most women. I do yoga, martial arts, interval training, and hiking and I live a low carb life style, and I’m not alone. It’s at the level where I often don’t menstruate because my calories in are so much less than my calories out. Yet my disease is still slowly progressing, like so many, and I am facing the possibility of losing my mobility due to the lipedema on my legs. So, please, be aware of the privilege you have of being able to lose weight and know many of us don’t have it. I’m very happy for you that you don’t have to be charged the fat tax, because diet and exercise probably work better for you than they do me. Congrats.
