Epiphany,

Thank you so much for your quality discourse and openness to talking.

I have no idea why a child at the age of 10 would not be allowed an abortion. I do know she was just over the 6 week mark. Ohio banned abortions after six weeks. I don't think they have exceptions for age or sexual abuse, rape, etc. I imagine when they made this law they didn't expect it to affect a 10 year old child. She's probably not what they pictured when they think of people who get abortions. However she was affected by this law. I think when we hear abortion we often think of babies being killed, but only 1% of abortions are after 21 weeks, and then at that point it's usually due to a severe fetal anomaly like my cousin had, or a serious threat to the mother's life.

Many states ban abortion after 6 weeks, because at 6 weeks is when the cells that eventually form the heart first start pulsing and later beating at that age, thus The Heart Beat Bill. It should be noted that in pregnancy, 6 weeks is actually 4. Pregnancy is calculate from the date of the last period. So a pregnant woman/child is considered to have been pregnant when was on her last period. She ovulates two weeks after that, then actually becomes pregnant.
