At my old district I knew several teachers who were physically assaulted by kids who were just having power struggles. The kids suffered no consequences. If a kid attacked me and chocked me, and I pushed them off of me, I would get in trouble for assaulting a student. Kids would walk in, call me a bitch, put their feet on the desk, get out their phones and ignore me. Then their parents would call me and complain that their kids said I was mean. Like seriously, there needs to be healthy boundaries, rules, and consequences for students. If anyone talked about discipline we were reminded that many of these kids had trauma and any sort of discipline would only harm them further and instead we needed to try to understand them. Yes, true, but they also needed boundaries and consequences. In public school you aren't allowed to set boundaries like that at all. I wasn't even allowed to kick kids out when then were harming me or the other students. This is why I only teach in private. There is a dean who will come take the students out if they pull this bullshit. There are detentions and suspensions and counselors to help with these things. In public school, it was made clear student could literally assault me and I would be blamed for it. I'm not going back.
