As I get older I have found more and more ways the medical community ignores women.
One big example is the disease lipedema which I have. 11% of females have lipedema, it’s more common among women than benign left handed.
Yet 90% of healthcare professionals don’t know about it, and there is very little research and treatment on it. The prognosis isn’t good. Pretty much I just have to never gain weight, or experience menopause, or have a baby, and I’ll be fine.
The treatments aren’t covered by insurance, and as the disease progresses we’re just considered fat lazy women who should have tried better. All doctors say is diet and exercise, when it’s been proven diet and exercise doesn’t actually remove lipedema fat, it just prevents it from getting worse. So just never gain weight, or have any hormonal changes that women naturally have.
There’s virtually no research, virtually no treatments, and what treatments there are aren’t covered. But there’s plenty of victim shamming and victim blaming.
